Beyond the Postcard: Paynal’s Cardio Art Walks - San Miguel Street Art

San Miguel de Allende is full of iconic beauty — towering churches, golden sunsets, postcard-perfect streets. But some of the best experiences happen a little off the beaten path. One of my favorites is Paynal’s Cardio Art Walks, a simple idea that has grown into a weekly ritual for locals and curious visitors alike.
A street-art walk? Isn’t all the art in San Miguel tucked neatly inside the Fábrica de Aurora and galleries throughout Centro? Well, not at all. Paynal Ward leads small groups through the outer colonias, where murals highlight all kinds of street art — some polished, some quirky, all worth stopping for. I’ve joined these walks several times, and every time I’ve discovered something new. Better yet, I almost always end up in conversations with people I hadn’t met before — some of whom later became genuine friends. These walks are free to join, though tips for the guide are always appreciated.

Paynal isn’t a muralist himself, but he knows the San Miguel art scene well. Over the years he’s gotten to know artists across the city and the stories behind many of the walls we pass. What started as something casual grew into a community favorite — part art tour, part workout, part local hangout.
There are three walks each week: two focused on the murals and one built for cardio — including San Miguel’s famous stair climbs. The routes change regularly, which means even if you return often, you rarely see the same walk twice. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Paynal points out murals, talks about artists, and shares what’s new in the street-art world. It never feels like a formal tour — more like being shown around by a friend who’s excited to let you in on their discoveries.
San Miguel’s street-art scene changes constantly. Some murals last for years; others are painted over in months. You’ll see everything from bold portraits to abstract work, political messages, collaborations, and tiny hidden pieces tucked into stairwells. You never know what you’ll find — and that’s half the fun.
Where this walk really shines
For me, the most meaningful part of these walks isn’t just the art — it’s the people. You might arrive as strangers, but by the third mural, you’re usually chatting like friends. The mix is always interesting: retirees who’ve lived here for years, weekend visitors, digital nomads, and Mexican locals who bring their own perspective to the experience. If you’re new to San Miguel or traveling solo, this is one of the easiest, most natural ways to connect. The murals are memorable, but the conversations often stay with you longer.
